Foundation Stage Curriculum

The changes to the EYFS Statutory Framework are being made to:

• improve outcomes for children at age 5, particularly in early Language and Literacy
• reduce workload such as unnecessary paperwork, so practitioners can spend more time with the children in their care

All schools and early years providers must follow the new early years foundation stage framework from September 2021.  Here is the link to the document:

Educational programmes, sometimes referred to as the ‘Early Years Curriculum’, are the areas of learning and development which must shape the activities and experiences that children have in early years settings, at all ages. Our setting will use the educational programmes to decide the approach to the curriculum that is right for our children at Redscope.

Redscope Foundation Stage is made up as follows:-

• Redscope Early Years – 2 years of age and rising 3s
• FS1 – also known as Nursery – 3 to 4 years of age
• FS2 – also known as Reception – 4 to 5 years of age

The 7 areas of learning and development remain the same.

The 3 prime areas:

• Communication and Language
• Physical development
• Personal, Social and Emotional development

The 4 specific areas:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts and Design

Our children learn by actively exploring their indoor and outdoor environments that are enriched with resources to support their learning and develop their creativity and critical thinking. Visits and visitors play an important role in developing first hand learning experiences.

Children are observed, assessed and their next steps of learning planned. This information is shared with parents. At the end of Reception (FS2), each child is assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs) and an EYFS profile is completed.  This is also shared with parents.

The changes

There are minor changes to the safeguarding and welfare section, including a new requirement to promote the good oral health of children.

What this means in practice

This could include things like talking to children about the effects of eating too many sweet things, or the importance of brushing your teeth.

Adding this requirement does not mean that practitioners must carry out supervised tooth brushing. Practitioners will not be assessing children’s oral health.
